A printable rent receipt template

“Print a blank receipt” prints the receipt above with empty lines in place of the details: a rent receipt template to fill in by hand. Print as many copies as you need and keep them as a receipt book, or save one as a PDF to print later.

When a receipt matters most

A receipt is the tenant's proof that the rent was paid. It matters most for payments that leave no trace of their own, such as cash, and whenever a tenant needs to show what they pay, for example for a tax return or a housing application. Keep a copy yourself as well: it is your record of the payment.

In Crestlet, each payment is recorded against the invoice it settles, so the record is there for both of you. See rent tracking.

Questions

Do I have to give my tenant a rent receipt?
It depends on where the home is. Some places require one, for example when the tenant asks for it or pays in cash; elsewhere it is simply good practice. Giving one for every payment avoids most arguments later.
Is what I type saved anywhere?
No. The receipt is made in your browser and nothing is sent to us. Leaving the page clears it, so print or save it first.
Can I print a receipt book to fill in by hand?
Yes. “Print a blank receipt” prints the same layout with empty lines. Print as many copies as you need.
Does a rent receipt need to be signed?
Not always, but a signature shows who received the money, and for cash it is the main proof the payment was made. The receipt has a line for it.
Is a handwritten rent receipt valid?
Generally, yes, if it shows the same details: who paid, who received the money, the amount, the date and the period it covers. The blank receipt is laid out for that.
How long should I keep rent receipts?
For as long as your tax authority asks you to keep records, which is several years in most places. The guide to tracking rent payments has the details.
What is the difference between a rent receipt and a rent invoice?
An invoice asks for a payment before it is made; a receipt confirms a payment once it has arrived. The rent invoice generator makes invoices.
