What to put on a rent invoice

A rent invoice tells the tenant what they owe, for which period and by when. Whatever the country, a clear one has:

  • The landlord's name and how to contact them, and the tenant's name.
  • The address of the rented home.
  • An invoice number, so that a payment can be matched to it.
  • The date it was issued and the date the rent is due.
  • The period the rent covers.
  • Each charge on its own line, such as rent, parking or a service fee, and the total.
  • How to pay: the bank details, or the other ways you accept.

Some countries add their own rules, for example on tax shown on an invoice for a business tenant. If you are not sure, check with a local adviser.

Invoice or receipt?

An invoice asks for payment; a receipt confirms it was made. Many landlords send an invoice before the rent is due and a receipt once it is paid. For the second, use the rent receipt generator.

Questions

Is it really free?
Yes. There is no account, no trial and no limit on how many invoices you make.
Is what I type saved anywhere?
No. The invoice is made in your browser and nothing is sent to us. Leaving the page clears it, so print or save it first.
How do I save the invoice as a PDF?
Choose “Print or save as PDF”, then pick “Save as PDF” (or “Microsoft Print to PDF”) as the printer in the dialog that opens.
